SOWK 6321 Advocacy and Social Policy
This course examines social welfare problems, social welfare systems and their interrelationship with direct practice and service delivery. Students scrutinize theory, policies and history to gain understanding on how they shape social welfare programs and social work practice. Historical and contemporary polices and legislation are critically examined to explain social welfare problems and root causes of poverty, racism, discrimination and oppression. Legislative processes of public policy making will be reviewed, and methods of influencing the policy making process particularly with regard to social work advocacy.
