SOWK 6310 Social Work Practice with Individuals

This course is the first in a sequence of practice courses that introduces students to the purpose, function and methods of social work practice with individuals. The influence of the professional social work context including agency, communities, local, state and federal policies to practice will be made to practice with individuals. Institutional oppression, racism, colonization and discrimination will be introduced as influential factors in the development of the therapeutic alliance, assessment, intervention and the evidence based practice process. This course will focus on the development of practice knowledge, values, skills, use of theory to explain human behavior and professional ethics in the practice with individuals. The teaching methods in this course will include critical thinking, written assignments, exams and social work practice simulation.
