SOWK 6311 Social Work Practice with Families

This course focuses on practice with families. The social construction of family will be challenged in how families are assessed and their needs understood. Structural racism and discrimination will be examined in how it affects family structures and functioning. Best practices will be examined with an emphasis on students expanding their knowledge and practice skills to understand the influence of Eurocentricity in family therapy. The course will focus on the development of practice knowledge, values, skills, use of theory to explain human behavior and professional ethics in the practice with families. Students will learn through family practice simulation, exams, critical review of family therapy theory and practice approaches and self-evaluation.
