Additional Academic Credentials and Program Options

Certificates 

Some academic units at UT Permian Basin offer certificate programs composed of a defined set of courses. The requirements for each certificate are determined by the faculty of the academic unit offering the certificate, not by the student’s major department.

Certificate programs are open to all UTPB students, regardless of their college or school affiliation. Students pursuing a certificate must meet all standard course prerequisites and must earn a grade of “C” or better in each course applied toward the certificate.

Courses used to fulfill major or minor requirements may also be applied (or “stacked”) toward certificate requirements. Additionally, a single course may be used to satisfy requirements for more than one certificate, where applicable.

Transfer credit is not accepted toward the completion of a UTPB certificate. Students are encouraged to consult with their academic advisor when selecting and planning certificate pathways to ensure alignment with their academic and career goals.

Double Major

Students pursuing a double major must fulfill all academic requirements for both majors. Courses may not be double-counted toward the semester credit hour requirements of more than one major. A minimum of 120 semester credit hours (SCH) is required for graduation; however, completing a double major may necessitate additional coursework beyond this minimum.

Each academic college or school must certify that the student has met all requirements for both majors, as well as any applicable college or school-specific criteria. A minor is not required when completing a double major.

Only one degree will be awarded, and one diploma will be issued. However, both majors will be recorded on the student’s official transcript. Please note that not all degree programs permit double majors; students should consult with academic advisors to confirm eligibility.

Concurrent Second Bachelor's Degree (150 SCH minimum)

A student desiring to complete two bachelor's degrees concurrently (showing both major degrees on the transcript and receiving two diplomas) must complete all requirements of each degree program including a minimum of 30 semester credit hours more than required in one of the degree programs. Students electing to major in two fields must meet the specified requirements for each major. No one course can be counted in the semester credit hours in more than one major. For example, the minimum is 120 semester credit hours to graduate with a bachelor's degree in one field, the student will need 150 semester credit hours to graduate with two bachelor's degrees (i.e., 120 semester credit hours for the first and 30 more semester credit hours for the second). One diploma is issued for each degree.

Second Bachelor's Degree (30 SCH minimum)

A student who has previously earned a bachelor’s degree from UTPB or from another accredited institution and who seeks to earn a second bachelor’s degree from UTPB must complete a minimum of 30 semester credit hours in residence at UTPB, including at least 6 upper‑division semester credit hours in the major field of study. The student is required to satisfy all requirements for the selected major, including any prerequisite or supporting coursework, even if completion of these requirements results in coursework exceeding the minimum 30 semester credit hours. In addition, the student must complete 6 semester credit hours in American Government (including the Texas Constitution) and 6 semester credit hours in American History. These courses may be counted toward the 30 semester credit hours if they are completed at UTPB.
