Art, BFA
Bachelor of Fine Arts – 4 years: Art (General Fine Arts) at UT Permian Basin is a professional degree designed to provide students with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to become professional artists and designers, and to develop the kind of inquiring mind that will lead to continued study at an advanced or professional level in the field. The total semester credit hours required for a BFA in Art is 120.
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree are required to enter two competitions (local, area, state, national, or international) prior to graduation.
Competencies
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art program, graduates will be able to:
- Demonstrate Advanced Studio Art Proficiency
Create a cohesive and conceptually unified body of original studio artwork that reflects advanced technical skill, research, and mastery of materials, processes, and techniques appropriate to the student’s chosen area of concentration.
- Apply Foundations and Advanced Artistic Practices
Apply foundational and advanced principles of visual art, including composition, form, concept development, and technique, in the execution of professional-quality artwork.
- Prepare and Present Professional-Level Artistic Work
Professionally present artwork through participation in multiple external juried exhibitions and by organizing and presenting a solo exhibition in a professional venue outside the Art Building.
- Develop Professional Artist Materials
Produce professional materials required for artistic practice, including a comprehensive portfolio, curriculum vitae, and artist statement that clearly articulates creative intent, process, and conceptual development.
- Analyze and Evaluate Works of Art
Identify, discuss, analyze, and compare significant works of art from a range of historical periods, cultural contexts, and artistic movements using appropriate art historical terminology and critical frameworks.
- Demonstrate Knowledge of Art History
Apply knowledge of historical and contemporary art movements, artists, and theoretical perspectives to both written and visual analyses consistent with professional and academic standards.
- Communicate Effectively in Written Form
Demonstrate effective written communication skills through artist statements and other written materials that are clear, well-organized, and appropriate for professional and academic art contexts.
- Exhibit Professional Readiness in the Visual Arts
Demonstrate readiness for professional practice or graduate study in the visual arts through portfolio quality, exhibition participation, independent project completion, and adherence to professional standards in presentation and critique.
Degree Requirements
- It is the student's responsibility to read the catalog and be familiar with and fulfill all the requirements for the BFA degree.
- Complete at least 120 sch for the BFA degree. At least 48 sch must be completed at the junior/senior level, and 24 of the last 30 must be taken at U.T.P.B.
- At least 30 sch must be taken at UTPB.
- Obtain at least a C grade in all major courses. Maintain a GPA of 2.0 or C average in all courses applicable toward the BA degree.

All Art majors will be required to meet the visual arts core or its equivalent. Students transferring to UT Permian Basin must also meet these requirements before taking junior and senior level Art courses.
