UT Permian Basin and Military Service

The University of Texas Permian Basin is proud to support active-duty service members, veterans, and military-affiliated students. As a designated Service-members Opportunity College (SOC), UTPB recognizes the unique experiences and commitments of military personnel by offering flexible academic pathways, including credit for qualifying military coursework and streamlined readmission policies for those called to active duty. The University is committed to helping military students achieve their educational goals through dedicated support services, academic advising, and access to financial aid resources tailored to their needs.

Credit for Military Coursework

As a designated Service-members Opportunity College (SOC), UT Permian Basin awards academic credit on a limited basis for military coursework.

To be considered for credit:

  • Students must submit an official American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) or Joint Service Transcript listing all completed military coursework.
  • The Office of Admissions evaluates the transcript to determine the transferability of coursework.
  • Credit may be awarded for military coursework that is determined to be equivalent to academic coursework offered at UT Permian Basin.

Important Notes:

  • Credit is not awarded for:
    • Military experience based solely on Military Occupational Specialties (MOS).
    • Coursework that is purely technical in nature and lacks academic equivalency.
  • The awarding of credit for military coursework does not guarantee that the credit will apply toward a specific degree program.
  • Students whose military coursework is not accepted for transfer may pursue credit through credit-by-examination (e.g., CLEP) or other petition procedures established by their academic department.

Readmission Following Military Service

In accordance with Section 51.9242 of the Texas Education Code, a student who withdraws from UT Permian Basin to perform active military service (excluding routine Texas National Guard training exercises) is eligible for automatic readmission for any semester or summer session that begins within one year of their release from active duty.

  • Reapplication Not Required: Students returning within one year are not required to reapply for admission.
  • Returning Student Application: If the student has been away for more than two consecutive semesters, they must submit a Returning Student Application to update demographic information and academic plans.
  • Financial Aid: Readmitted students may be eligible to receive the same financial assistance they were awarded prior to withdrawal.

Additionally, under Section 51.844 of the Texas Education Code, graduate or professional students who withdraw or defer admission to perform active military service in a combative operation are entitled to:

  • Readmission to their previous program, and
  • Full recognition of all previously completed coursework and standardized test scores submitted prior to withdrawal.
