Satisfactory Academic Progress

Federal and state regulations require that students receiving financial aid maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) toward the completion of their degree. These standards are designed to ensure that financial aid supports students who are making consistent and measurable academic progress.

UT Permian Basin evaluates SAP using three key components:

  1. Qualitative Measure – A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) must be maintained.
  2. Quantitative Measure – Students must successfully complete a minimum percentage of attempted coursework.
  3. Maximum Time Frame – Students must complete their degree within a specified time limit, typically no more than 150% of the published program length.

Failure to meet SAP standards may result in the suspension of financial aid eligibility.

Scholarship and Institutional Aid Standards

Most private and institutional scholarships also have specific academic and enrollment requirements for renewal or continuation. These criteria may vary by scholarship and are typically outlined at the time of the award.

Although state and federal policy has established many objectives for student financial aid programs, one clear purpose is to fund only students who meet certain academic standards. Institutions are, therefore, required by law to formulate standards to gauge the progress of students receiving federal and state financial aid by applying both qualitative and quantitative measurements to academic work as well as a maximum time limit for the completion of a degree.

Most private and institutional scholarships have specific academic and enrollment standards required for renewal or continuance of the award, if renewal is allowed.
