Course Instruction Mode
Course Instruction Modes
UT Permian Basin offers a variety of instructional delivery formats to meet the diverse needs of students. Each mode is defined by the proportion of instruction delivered in person versus remotely or online:
Online Courses
- Definition: More than 85% of instruction is delivered asynchronously online (students and instructors are not in the same place or interacting in real time).
- In-Person Requirement: May include limited in-person meetings, but no more than 15% of total instructional time.
Remote Courses
- Definition: Instruction is delivered synchronously online (students and instructors meet virtually in real time).
- In-Person Requirement: No on-campus attendance required, but students must log in at scheduled times to participate via video conferencing.
Hybrid Courses
- Definition: Between 50% and 85% of instruction occurs remotely or online.
- In-Person Requirement: Combines in-person and remote/online instruction, with a majority of content delivered when students and instructors are not in the same place.
HyFlex Courses
- Definition: Offers a flexible mix of in-person and remote/online learning.
- In-Person Requirement: At least 50% of instruction occurs in person, with students having the option to attend either in person or remotely.
Face-to-Face (In-Person) Courses
- Definition: More than 85% of instruction occurs in person, with students and instructors physically present in the same location.
Online Courses are those in which more than 85 percent of the planned instruction occurs online/virtually (asynchronously) when students and faculty are not in the same place. A fully online course is one in which mandatory in-person meetings occur no more than 15% of the planned instructional time.
- Remote Courses are ones in which students, while not required to physically come to campus to attend in-person classes, are required to "attend" virtually/remotely (synchronously) during scheduled days and times, with students expected to log in and participate in the lecture via video conferences.
- Hybrid Courses are courses in which the majority (more than 50% but less than 85%) of the planned instruction occurs when students and instructor(s) are not in the same place. This form of instruction offers a mix of on-campus/in-person and remote/online/electronic learning.
- HyFlex Courses are those which, like hybrid courses, offer a mix of on-campus/in-person and remote/online/electronic learning. In these courses at least 50% of the planned instruction occurs when students and instructor(s) are in the same place.
- Face-to-Face/In-Person Courses are those in which more than 85 percent of the planned instruction occurs when students are in the same place with an instructor(s).
