NURS 2301 Human Nutrition for Health Sciences

This course introduces foundational concepts of human nutrition as they relate to health promotion, disease prevention, and overall well-being across the lifespan. Students examine core nutritional concepts including macronutrients, micronutrients, metabolism, hydration, and energy balance, and their impact on physiological function and health outcomes.

Emphasis is placed on the relationship between nutrition and alterations in health concepts such as metabolism, elimination, perfusion, and immune function. Students explore factors influencing nutritional status, including age, culture, socioeconomic conditions, and non-medical drivers of health.

Students develop the ability to interpret basic nutritional information, evaluate dietary patterns, and identify risk factors associated with nutritional imbalances. The course introduces principles of safe and evidence-informed nutritional practices to support health promotion and prevention of chronic conditions.

The course supports the development of foundational knowledge and skills necessary for nursing practice by emphasizing patient-centered approaches to nutrition, health education, and lifestyle modification. Students are prepared to integrate nutritional concepts into clinical reasoning and to collaborate with members of the healthcare team in supporting optimal health outcomes.
