The program is administered by the Office of Graduate Studies, the College of Engineering and Sciences, and the Department of Mathematics.
The primary mission of the Master of Arts in Mathematics (MAM) degree is to prepare mathematics and mathematics education professions to enter the workforce and be highly productive in the fields of mathematics, mathematics education or other related fields requiring a high expertise in mathematics.
Competencies
Upon completion of the Mathematics program, students will be able to:
- Algebra and Analysis
Students will acquire advanced knowledge and skills in algebraic concept, including normality, ideals, isomorphism, and topis in analysis, including investigations in convergence, continuity, compactness, and connectedness, the Riemann-Stieltjes integral, and sequences of functions.
- Conceptual Understanding
Students will acquire advanced knowledge, skills, and deep conceptual understand in all MAM courses of each individual degree plan and be provided opportunities to apply the knowledge to real-life situations in each course.
- Research
Students in the thesis track will become part of the research mathematics or mathematics education community by attending presentations or thesis defenses of research level mathematics or mathematics education.
- Post-Grad
Students will have the advanced mathematical skills necessary to pursue PhD's in mathematics, mathematics education, or other related fields.
- Employment
Students will have the skills necessary to gain employment in areas closely associated with mathematics, mathematics education or closely related fields.
- Mathematics Education
Students who graduate with an emphasis in mathematics education will have expertise in curriculum design, mentoring, pedagogical strategies assessment that engage an increase student conceptual understand, and formal/informal assessment methodology.
Admission Requirements
General - Students who wish to pursue the MAM degree program must meet the general UT Permian Basin graduate admissions requirements.
Departmental - The MAM degree has two emphasis tracks: Mathematics and Mathematics Education. A student in either track has the option of pursing a Master's thesis.
- An undergraduate degree in mathematics is strongly advised.
- A candidate with undergraduate experience in Mathematics but without a formal degree may submit a waiver based on his/her record. The faculty will evaluate such a petition.
- Candidates designated as not being adequately prepared may be admitted conditionally with an approved leveling plan documenting additional coursework required to enable the candidate to be adequately prepared to pursue the MAM degree. Students admitted conditionally must complete the assigned leveling requirements before officially being admitted to the MAM degree program.
Regular Admission Status
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university.
- GPA of 3.0 or better in the last 60 credit hours
- GRE Scores or two letters of recommendation from professors that are able to speak to the applicant's mathematical ability and/or ability to succeed in graduate school (At least one must be a STEM professor).
- Applicants should have letters of reference submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research directly by the reference writer. Applicants must fill out and submit a waiver of right of access form for each letter of recommendation. Applicants can obtain this form by emailing the area coordinator of the graduate mathematics program.
- At least one of the following courses or their equivalent with a B or better (Math 4315 Algebraic Structures or Math 4360 Intermediate Analysis)
- (If GRE scores are used) Entrance Scores (ES) = 1600 minimum Entrance Score (ES) = (GPA x 267) + (GRE Quantitative Score x 5.23) (GPA equates to 50% of the decision, GRE Quantitative Reasoning equates to 50% of the decision).
Conditional Admission Status
If a student has a GPA below a 3.0 but not lower than a 2.75 in the last 60 credit hours a student will be considered for admission based on their complete application. The faculty will prepare a degree plan to address potential issues with the applicant's academic record. Conditionally, admitted students may be required to take leveling courses before being fully admitted to the Mathematics graduate program and will have to maintain the required CGPA to remain a graduate student.
